Rona Rona sister oldenA
Rona in the moonB
You'll never break your prison goldenA
Never late or soonB
-
Rona for her crying daughterC
At the dead of nightD
Took the gourd and went for waterC
Went without a lightD
-
There she heard the owlets wrangleE
With an angry hootF
Stick and stone and thorny tangleE
Wounded Rona's footG
-
'Boil the moon ' she said in passionA
'Boil your lazy headH
Hiding thus in idle fashionA
In your starry bed '-
-
Angry was the moon in heavenA
Down to earth she cameI
'Stay you ever unforgivenA
For the word of shameI
-
Up you made the moon a bywordJ
Up and dwell with me '-
Rona felt the drawing skywardJ
Seized a ngaio treeK
-
But from earth the ngaio partedL
Like a bitten threadH
Like a comet upward dartedM
Rona overheadH
-
In the moon is Rona sittingN
Never to be freeK
With the gourd she held in flittingN
And the ngaio treeK
-
You'll never break your prison goldenA
Never late or soonB
Rona Rona sister oldenA
Rona in the moonB
