Dunedin In The Gloaming Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAA BBB AAA CCC DDD CCC EEE EEE CCC FFF

Like a black enamoured King whispered low the thunderA
To the lights of Roslyn terraced far asunderA
Hovered low the sister cloud in wild warm wonderA
-
O my love Dunedin town the only the abidingB
Who can look undazzled up where the Norn is ridingB
Watch the sword of destiny from the scabbard glidingB
-
Dark and rich and ringing true word and look for everA
Taking to her woman heart all forlorn endeavourA
Heaven's sea about her feet not the bounded riverA
-
Sister of the mountain mist and never to be holdenC
With the weary sophistries that dimmer eyes emboldenC
O the dark Dunedin town shot with green and goldenC
-
Then a silver pioneer netted in the riftD
Leaning over Maori Hill dreaming in the liftD
Dropped her starry memories through the passioned driftD
-
Once I do remember them the glory and the gardenC
Ere the elder stars had learnt God's mystery of pardonC
Ere the youngest I myself had seen the flaming wardenC
-
Once even after even I stole ever shy and earlyE
To mirror me within a glade of Eden cool and pearlyE
Where shy and cold and holy ran a torrent sought but rarelyE
-
And fondly could I swear that this my glade had risen newlyE
Burst the burning desert tomb wherein she lieth trulyE
To keep an Easter with the birds and me who loved her dulyE
-
Wailing laughing loving hoar spake the lordly oceanC
You are sheen and steadfastness I am sheen and motionC
Gulfing argosies for whim navies for a notionC
-
Sleep you well Dunedin Town though loud the lulling lyre isF
Lady of the stars terrene where quick the human fire isF
Lady of the Maori pines the turrets and the eyriesF
