I passed an inland cliff precipitateA
From tiny caves peeped many a soot black pollB
In each a mother martin sat elateA
And of the news delivered her small soulB
-
Fantastic chatter hasty glad and gayC
Whereof the meaning was not ill to tellD
Gossip how wags the world with you to dayC
Gossip the world wags well the world wags wellD
-
And heark'ning I was sure their little onesE
Were in the bird talk and discourse was madeF
Concerning hot sea bights and tropic sunsE
For a clear sultriness the tune conveyedF
-
And visions of the sky as of a cupG
Hailing down light on pagan Pharaoh's sandH
And quivering air waves trembling up and upG
And blank stone faces marvellously blandH
-
When should the young be fledged and with them hieI
Where costly day drops down in crimson lightJ
Fortunate countries of the fireflyK
Swarm with blue diamonds all the sultry nightJ
-
And the immortal moon takes turn with themL
When should they pass again by that red landH
Where lovely mirage works a broidered hemL
To fringe with phantom palms a robe of sandH
-
When should they dip their breasts again and playC
In slumberous azure pools clear as the airM
Where rosy winged flamingoes fish all dayC
Stalking amid the lotus blossom fairM
-
Then over podded tamarinds bear their flightJ
While cassias blossom in the zone of calmsN
And so betake them to a south sea bightJ
To gossip in the crowns of cocoa palmsN
-
Whose roots are in the spray O haply thereM
Some dawn white winged they might chance to findO
A frigate standing in to make more fairM
The loneliness unaltered of mankindO
-
A frigate come to water nuts would fallP
And nimble feet would climb the flower flushed strandH
While northern talk would ring and there withalP
The martins would desire the cool north landH
-
And all would be as it had been beforeQ
Again at eve there would be news to tellP
Who passed should hear them chant it o'er and o'erR
Gossip how wags the world ' 'Well gossip well '-
