THE COMING IN OF THE MERMAIDENA
-
The moon is bleached as white as woolB
And just dropping underC
Every star is gone but threeD
And they hang far asunderC
There's a sea ghost all in grayE
A tall shape of wonderC
-
I am not satisfied with sleepF
The night is not endedG
But look how the sea ghost comesH
With wan skirts extendedG
Stealing up in this weird hourC
When light and dark are blendedG
-
A vessel To the old pier endI
Her happy course she's keepingJ
I heard them name her yesterdayE
Some were pale with weepingJ
Some with their heart hunger sighedK
She's in and they are sleepingJ
-
O now with fancied greetings blestL
They comfort their long achingJ
The sea of sleep hath borne to themM
What would not come with wakingJ
And the dreams shall most be trueN
In their blissful breakingJ
-
The stars are gone the rose bloom comesH
No blush of maid is sweeterC
The red sun half way out of bedO
Shall be the first to greet herC
None tell the news yet sleepers wakeP
And rise and run to meet herC
-
Their lost they have they hold from painA
A keener bliss they borrowQ
How natural is joy my heartR
How easy after sorrowQ
For once the best is come that hopeS
Promised them to morrowQ
