Let us now go even unto BethlehemA
-
O Night of nights O nightB
Desired of man so longC
The ancient heavens fled forth in lightB
To sing thee thy new songC
And shooting down the steepD
To shepherd folk of oldE
An angel while they watch'd their sheepD
Set foot beside the foldE
-
Lo while as like to dieF
Of that keen light he shedG
They look'd on his pure majestyH
Amazed and sore besteadH
Lo while with words of cheerI
He bade their trembling ceaseJ
The flocks of God swept sweetly nearI
And sang to them of peaceJ
-
All on the hillside grassK
That fulgent radiance fellL
So close those innocents did passK
Their words were heard right wellL
Among the sheep their wingsM
Some folding walk'd the sodH
An order'd throng of shining thingsM
White with the smile of GodH
-
The waits of heaven to hearN
Oh what it must have beenO
Think Christian people think and fearI
For cold hearts for uncleanP
Think how the times go byF
How love and longing failQ
Think how we live and how we dieF
As this were but a taleQ
-
O tender tale of oldH
Live in thy dear renownR
God's smile was in the dark beholdH
That way His hosts came downR
Light up great God Thy WordH
Make the blest meaning strongC
As if our ears indeed had heardH
The glory of their songC
-
It was so far awayS
But Thou could'st make it nearI
And all its living might displayS
And cry to it Be hereN
Here in th' unresting townR
As once remote to themA
Who heard it when the heavens came downR
On pastoral BethlehemA
-
It was so long agoT
But God can make it nowU
And as with that sweet overflowT
Our empty hearts endowU
Take Lord those words outwornU
O make them new for ayeF
Speak Unto you a child is bornU
To day to day to dayS
