Thy gentleness hath made me greatA
-
Now winter past the white thorn bowerB
Breaks forth and buds down all the glenC
Now spreads the leaf and grows the flowerB
So grows the life of God in menC
-
Oh my child God most gentle KingD
To me Thy waxing glory showE
Wake in my heart as wakes the springD
Grow as the leaf and lily growE
-
I was a child when Thou a childF
Didst make Thyself again to meG
And holy harmless undefiledF
Play'd at Thy mother Mary's kneeG
-
Thou gav'st Thy pure example soE
The copy in my childish breastF
Was a child's copy I did knowE
God made in childhood manifestF
-
Now I am grown and Thou art grownH
The God man strong to love to willI
Who was alone yet not aloneH
Held in His Father's presence stillI
-
Now do I know Thee for my cureJ
My peace the Absolver for me setF
Thy goings pass through deeps obscureJ
But Thou with me art gentle yetF
-
Long suffering Lord to man reveal'dF
As One that e'en the child doth waitF
Thy full salvation is my shieldF
Thy gentleness hath made me greatF
