I read upon that bookA
Which down the golden gulf doth let us lookA
On the sweet days of pastoral majestyB
I read upon that bookA
How when the Shepherd Prince did fleeB
Red Esau's twin he desolate tookA
The stone for a pillow then he fell on sleepC
And lo there was a ladder Lo there hungD
A ladder from the star place and it clungD
To the earth it tied her so to heaven and OE
There fluttered wingsF
Then were ascending and descending thingsF
That stepped to him where he lay lowE
Then up the ladder would a drifting goE
This feathered brood of heaven and showE
Small as white flakes in winter that are blownG
Together underneath the great white throneG
-
When I had shut the book I saidH
Now as for me my dreams upon my bedH
Are not like Jacob's dreamI
Yet I have got it in my life yes IJ
And many more it doth not us beseemI
Therefore to sighJ
Is there not hung a ladder in our skyJ
Yea and moreover all the way up on highJ
Is thickly peopled with the prayers of menK
We have no dream What thenK
Like wing d wayfarers the height they scaleL
By Him that offers them they shall prevailL
The prayers of menK
But where is found a prayer for meI
How should I prayM
My heart is sick and full of strifeN
I heard one whisper with departing breathO
'Suffer us not for any pains of deathO
To fall from Thee '-
But O the pains of life the pains of lifeN
There is no comfort now and naught to winP
But yet I will beginP
-

-
Preserve to me my wealth I do not sayM
For that is wasted awayM
And much of it was cankered ere it wentQ
Preserve to me my health I cannot sayM
For that upon a dayM
Went after other delights to banishmentR

-
What can I pray Give me forgetfulnessM
No I would still possessM
Past away smiles though present fronts be sternS
Give me again my kindred Nay not soM
Not idle prayers We knowM
They that have crossed the river cannot returnS

-
I do not pray Comfort me comfort meI
For how should comfort beI
O O that cooing mouth that little white headH
No but I pray If it be not too lateT
Open to me the gateT
That I may find my babe when I am deadH
-

-
Show me the path I had forgotten TheeI
When I was happy and freeI
Walking down here in the gladsome light o' the sunU
But now I come and mourn O set my feetV
In the road to Thy blest seatV
And for the rest O God Thy will be doneU
