A waxing moon that crescent yetA
In all its silver beauty setA
And rose no more in the lonesome nightB
To shed full orbed its longed for lightB
Then was it dark on wold and leaC
In home in heart the hours were drearD
Father and mother could no light seeC
And the hearts trembled and there was fearD
So on the mount Christ's chosen threeC
Unware that glory it did shroudE
Feared when they entered into the cloudE
-
She was the best part of love's fairD
Adornment life's God given careD
As if He bade them guard His ownF
Who should be soon anear His throneF
Dutiful happy and who sayG
When childhood smiles itself awayG
'More fair than morn shall prove the day '-
Sweet souls so nigh to God that restH
How shall be bettering of your bestH
That promise heaven alone shall viewI
That hope can ne'er with us come trueI
That prophecy life hath not skillJ
No nor time leave that it fulfilJ
-
There is but heaven for childhood neverD
Can yield the all it meant for everD
Or is there earth must wane to lessK
What dawned so close by perfectnessK
-
How guileless sweet by gift divineL
How beautiful dear child was thineL
Spared all their grief of thee bereavenL
Winner who had not greatly strivenL
Hurts of sin shall not thee soilJ
Carking care thy beauty spoilJ
So early blest so young forgivenL
-
Among the meadows fresh to viewI
And in the woodland ways she grewI
On either side a hand to holdM
Nor the world's worst of evil knewI
Nor rued its miseries manifoldM
Nor made discovery of its coldM
What more like one with morn contentN
Or of the morrow diffidentN
Unconscious beautiful she stoodN
Calm in young stainless maidenhoodN
Then with the last steps childhood trodN
Took up her fifteen years to GodN
-
Farewell sweet hope not long to lastN
All life is better for thy pastN
Farewell till love with sorrow meetN
To learn that tears are obsoleteN
