IA
-
An empty sky a world of heatherB
Purple of foxglove yellow of broomC
We two among them wading togetherB
Shaking out honey treading perfumeC
-
Crowds of bees are giddy with cloverB
Crowds of grasshoppers skip at our feetD
Crowds of larks at their matins hang overB
Thanking the Lord for a life so sweetD
-
Flusheth the rise with her purple favorB
Gloweth the cleft with her golden ringE
'Twixt the two brown butterflies waverB
Lightly settle and sleepily swingE
-
We two walk till the purple diethF
And short dry grass under foot is brownG
But one little streak at a distance liethF
Green like a ribbon to prank the downG
-
-
IIA
-
Over the grass we stepped unto itH
And God He knoweth how blithe we wereB
Never a voice to bid us eschew itH
Hey the green ribbon that showed so fairI
-
Hey the green ribbon we kneeled beside itH
We parted the grasses dewy and sheenJ
Drop over drop there filtered and slidedH
A tiny bright beck that trickled betweenJ
-
Tinkle tinkle sweetly it sang to usK
Light was our talk as of fa ry bellsL
Fa ry wedding bells faintly rung to usK
Down in their fortunate parallelsL
-
Hand in hand while the sun peered overB
We lapped the grass on that youngling springE
Swept back its rushes smoothed its cloverB
And said Let us follow it westeringE
-
-
IIIA
-
A dappled sky a world of meadowsM
Circling above us the black rooks flyA
Forward backward lo their dark shadowsM
Flit on the blossoming tapestryN
-
Flit on the beck for her long grass partethF
As hair from a maid's bright eyes blown backE
And lo the sun like a lover dartethF
His flattering smile on her wayward trackE
-
Sing on we sing in the glorious weatherB
Till one steps over the tiny strandH
So narrow in sooth that still togetherB
On either brink we go hand in handH
-
The beck grows wider the hands must severB
On either margin our songs all doneO
We move apart while she singeth everB
Taking the course of the stooping sunO
-
He prays Come over I may not followP
I cry Return but he cannot comeQ
We speak we laugh but with voices hollowP
Our hands are hanging our hearts are numbQ
-
-
IVR
-
A breathing sigh a sigh for answerB
A little talking of outward thingsS
The careless beck is a merry dancerB
Keeping sweet time to the air she singsS
-
A little pain when the beck grows widerB
Cross to me now for her wavelets swellT
I may not cross and the voice beside herB
Faintly reacheth though heeded wellT
-
No backward path ah no returningE
No second crossing that ripple's flowP
Come to me now for the west is burningE
Come ere it darkens Ah no ah noP
-
Then cries of pain and arms outreachingE
The beck grows wider and swift and deepU
Passionate words as of one beseechingE
The loud beck drowns them we walk and weepU
-
-
VR
-
A yellow moon in splendor droopingE
A tired queen with her state oppressedH
Low by rushes and swordgrass stoopingE
Lies she soft on the waves at restH
-
The desert heavens have felt her sadnessK
Her earth will weep her some dewy tearsV
The wild beck ends her tune of gladnessV
And goeth stilly as soul that fearsV
-
We two walk on in our grassy placesV
On either marge of the moonlit floodH
With the moon's own sadness in our facesV
Where joy is withered blossom and budH
-
-
VIR
-
A shady freshness chafers whirringE
A little piping of leaf hid birdsV
A flutter of wings a fitful stirringE
A cloud to the eastward snowy as curdsV
-
Bare grassy slopes where kids are tetheredH
Round valleys like nests all ferny linedH
Round hills with fluttering tree tops featheredH
Swell high in their freckled robes behindH
-
A rose flush tender a thrill a quiverB
When golden gleams to the tree tops glideH
A flashing edge for the milk white riverB
The beck a river with still sleek tideH
-
Broad and white and polished as silverB
On she goes under fruit laden treesV
Sunk in leafage cooeth the culverB
And 'plaineth of love's disloyaltiesV
-
Glitters the dew and shines the riverB
Up comes the lily and dries her bellT
But two are walking apart foreverB
And wave their hands for a mute farewellT
-
-
VIIR
-
A braver swell a swifter slidingE
The river hasteth her banks recedeH
Wing like sails on her bosom glidingE
Bear down the lily and drown the reedH
-
Stately prows are rising and bowingE
Shouts of mariners winnow the airI
And level sands for banks endowingE
The tiny green ribbon that showed so fairI
-
While O my heart as white sails shiverB
And crowds are passing and banks stretch wideH
How hard to follow with lips that quiverB
That moving speck on the far off sideH
-
Farther farther I see it know itH
My eyes brim over it melts awayW
Only my heart to my heart shall show itH
As I walk desolate day by dayW
-
-
VIIR
-
And yet I know past all doubting trulyR
A knowledge greater than grief can dimX
I know as he loved he will love me dulyR
Yea better e'en better than I love himX
-
And as I walk by the vast calm riverB
The awful river so dread to seeR
I say Thy breadth and thy depth foreverB
Are bridged by his thoughts that cross to meR
