Came the dread Archer up yonder lawnA
Night is the time for the old to dieB
But woe for an arrow that smote the fawnA
When the hind that was sick unscathed went byB
-
Father lay moaning Her fault was soreC
Night is the time when the old must dieB
Yet ah to bless her my child once moreC
For heart is failing the end is nighB
-
Daughter my daughter my girl I criedD
Night is the time for the old to dieB
Woe for the wish if till morn ye bideD
Dark was the welkin and wild the skyB
-
Heavily plunged from the roof the snowE
Night is the time when the old will dieB
She answered My mother 'tis well I goE
Sparkled the north star the wrack flew highB
-
First at his head and last at his feetF
Night is the time when the old should dieB
Kneeling I watched till his soul did fleetF
None else that loved him none else were nighB
-
I wept in the night as the desolate weepG
Night is the time for the old to dieB
Cometh my daughter the drifts are deepG
Across the cold hollows how white they lieB
-
I sought her afar through the spectral treesH
Night is the time when the old must dieB
The fells were all muffled the floods did freezeH
And a wrathful moon hung red in the skyB
-
By night I found her where pent waves stealI
Night is the time when the old should dieB
But she lay stiff by the locked mill wheelI
And the old stars lived in their homes on highB
