Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCDDEFF GGHHIIIIIIIIJJKKBBII I IL

A
-
The peacock to the queen of heavenB
Complain'd in some such wordsC
'Great goddess you have givenB
To me the laughing stock of birdsC
A voice which fills by taste quite justD
All nature with disgustD
Whereas that little paltry thingE
The nightingale pours from her throatF
So sweet and ravishing a noteF
She bears alone the honours of the spring '-
-
In anger Juno heardG
And cried 'Shame on you jealous birdG
Grudge you the nightingale her voiceH
Who in the rainbow neck rejoiceH
Than costliest silks more richly tintedI
In charms of grace and form unstintedI
Who strut in kingly prideI
Your glorious tail spread wideI
With brilliants which in sheen doI
Outshine the jeweller's bow windowI
Is there a bird beneath the blueI
That has more charms than youI
No animal in everything can shineJ
By just partition of our gifts divineJ
Each has its full and proper shareK
Among the birds that cleave the airK
The hawk's a swift the eagle is a brave oneB
For omens serves the hoarse old ravenB
The rook's of coming ills the prophetI
And if there's any discontentI
I've heard not of itI
-
'Cease then your envious complaintI
Or I instead of making up your lackL
Will take your boasted plumage from your back '-
