-
Old Mister Fox was at expense one dayB
To dine old Mistress StorkC
The fare was light was nothing sooth to sayB
Requiring knife and forkC
That sly old gentleman the dinner giverD
Was you must understand a frugal liverD
This once at least the total matterD
Was thinnish soup served on a platterD
For madam's slender beak a fruitless puzzleE
Till all had pass'd the fox's lapping muzzleE
But little relishing his laughterD
Old gossip Stork some few days afterD
Return'd his Foxship's invitationF
Without a moment's hesitationF
He said he'd go for he must own heG
Ne'er stood with friends for ceremonyG
And so precisely at the hourD
He hied him to the lady's bowerD
Where praising her politenessH
He finds her dinner right niceI
Its punctuality and plentyG
Its viands cut in mouthfuls daintyG
Its fragrant smell were powerful to exciteJ
Had there been need his foxish appetiteJ
But now the dame to torture himK
Such wit was in herD
Served up her dinnerD
In vases made so tall and slimK
They let their owner's beak pass in and outL
But not by any means the fox's snoutL
All arts without availM
With drooping head and tailM
As ought a fox a fowl had cheatedN
The hungry guest at last retreatedN
-
Ye knaves for you is this recitalE
You'll often meet Dame Stork's requitalE
