Would you be glad of heart and goodA
Would you forget life's toil and careB
Come lose yourself in this old woodA
When May's soft touch is everywhereB
-
The hawthorn trees are white as snowC
The basswood flaunts its feathery spraysD
The willows kiss the stream belowC
And listen to its flatteriesD
-
O willows supple yellow greenE
Long have I flowed o'er stock and stoneF
I say with truth I have not seenE
A rarer beauty than your ownF
-
The rough bark hickory elm and beechG
With quick'ning thrill and growth are rifeH
Oak maple through the heart of eachG
There runs a glorious tide of lifeH
-
Fresh leaves young buds on every handI
On trunk and limb a hint of redJ
The gleam of poplars tall that standI
With God's own sunshine on their headJ
-
The mandrake's silken parasolC
Is fluttering in the breezes boldK
And yonder where the waters brawlC
The buttercups show green and goldK
-
The slender grape vine sways and weavesD
From sun kissed sward and nook of gloomL
There comes the smell of earth and leavesD
The breath of wild flowers all abloomL
-
Spring's gleam is on the robin's breastM
Spring's joy is in the robin's songN
My mate is in yon sheltered nestM
Ho love is sweet and summer longN
-
While full and jubilant and clearO
All the long day from dawn till darkP
The trill of bobolink we hearQ
Of hermit thrush and meadowlarkP
-
Sit here among the grass and fernR
Unmindful of the cares of lifeH
The lessons we have had to learnR
The hurts we've gotten in the strifeH
-
There's youth in every breath we takeS
Forgetfulness of loss and tearsD
Within the heart there seems to wakeS
The gladness of the long past yearsD
-
Peace keeps us company to dayT
In this old fragrant shadowy woodA
We lift our eyes to heaven and sayT
The world is fair and God is goodA
