Two men were born the self same hourA
The one was heir to untold wealthB
To pride of birth and love of powerA
The other's heritage was healthB
-
A sturdy frame an honest heartC
Of human sympathy a storeD
A strength and will to do his partC
A nature wholesome to the coreD
-
The two grew up to man's estateE
And took their places in the strifeF
One found a sphere both wide and greatE
One found the toil and stress of lifeF
-
Fate is a partial jade I trowG
She threw the rich man gold and frameH
The laurel wreath to deck his browI
High place the multitude's acclaimH
-
The common things the other hadJ
The common hopes to thrill him deepK
The common joys to make him gladJ
The common griefs to make him weepK
-
No high ambitions fired his breastL
The peace of God the love of friendM
Of wife and child these seemed the bestL
These held and swayed him to the endM
-
The two grew old and death's clear callN
Came to them both the self same dayO
To him whose name was known to allN
To him who walked his lowly wayO
-
Down to his grave the rich man wentP
With cortege long with pomp and prideQ
O'er him was reared a monumentR
That told his virtues far and wideQ
-
Told of his wealth his lineage highS
His statesmanship his trophies wonT
How he had filled the public eyeS
But empty praise when all was doneT
-
The other found a narrow bedU
Within God's acre peaceful loneV
The throng cared not that he was deadU
A man uncultured and unknownV
-
But in the house that he had leftW
A woman whispered through her tearsX
Christ comfort me who am bereftW
Of love that failed not through the yearsY
-
And oft his stalwart sons and tallN
Would murmur as their eyes grew dimZ
A useful life is best of allN
God grant we pattern after himZ
-
A sick man sighed I'll miss his smileA2
A shrivelled crone did shake her headU
And mutter to herself the whileA2
How oft his hand had given breadU
-
A maimed child sobbed He carried meB2
To gather blossoms in the woodC2
And more than one said brokenlyA2
A man who always did me goodC2
-
One came at twilight to the graveD2
And knelt and kissed the fresh turned sodE2
Oh faithful soul she cried and braveD2
'Twas you that led me back to GodE2
-
Back from the sin the shame the snareF2
Forget your trust and faith not IS
Each helpful word each tender prayerF2
I will remember till I dieS
-
Two men that sleep above the oneT
The monument an artist's handG2
Has fashioned from the block of stoneV
A thing of beauty tall and grandG2
-
Above the other naught what thenH2
Ere he did fold his hands for restL
He builded in the hearts of menH2
The fairest monument and bestL
