When we were children long ago	A
And crept to bed at close of day	B
With backward glance and footstep slow	A
Though all aweary with our play	B
Do you remember how the room	C
The little room with window deep	D
Would fill with shadows and with gloom	C
And fright us so we could not sleep	D

For O the things we see at night	E
The dragons grim the goblins tall	F
And worst of all the ghosts in white	E
That range themselves along the wall	F

We could but cover up our head	G
And listen to our heart's wild beat	H
Such dreadful things about our bed	G
And no protection save a sheet	H
Then slept and woke quite unafraid	I
The sun was shining and we found	J
Our shadows and our ghosts all laid	I
Our world a glorious playing ground	J

For O the things we see at night	E
The dragons grim the goblins tall	F
And worst of all the ghosts in white	E
That range themselves along the wall	F

We are but children still the years	K
Have never taught us to be bold	L
For mark our trembling and our fears	K
When sometimes as in days of old	L
We in the darkness lie awake	M
And see come stealing to our side	N
A ghostly throng the grave Mistake	M
The Failure big the broken Pride	N

How close they creep How big they loom	C
The Task which waits the Cares which creep	D
A child affrighted in the gloom	C
We fain would hide our head and weep	D
When lo the coward fear is gone	O
The golden sunshine fills the air	P
And God has sent us with the dawn	O
The strength and will to do and dare	P
