When we were children long agoA
And crept to bed at close of dayB
With backward glance and footstep slowA
Though all aweary with our playB
Do you remember how the roomC
The little room with window deepD
Would fill with shadows and with gloomC
And fright us so we could not sleepD
-
For O the things we see at nightE
The dragons grim the goblins tallF
And worst of all the ghosts in whiteE
That range themselves along the wallF
-
We could but cover up our headG
And listen to our heart's wild beatH
Such dreadful things about our bedG
And no protection save a sheetH
Then slept and woke quite unafraidI
The sun was shining and we foundJ
Our shadows and our ghosts all laidI
Our world a glorious playing groundJ
-
For O the things we see at nightE
The dragons grim the goblins tallF
And worst of all the ghosts in whiteE
That range themselves along the wallF
-
We are but children still the yearsK
Have never taught us to be boldL
For mark our trembling and our fearsK
When sometimes as in days of oldL
We in the darkness lie awakeM
And see come stealing to our sideN
A ghostly throng the grave MistakeM
The Failure big the broken PrideN
-
For O the things we see at nightE
The dragons grim the goblins tallF
And worst of all the ghosts in whiteE
That range themselves along the wallF
-
How close they creep How big they loomC
The Task which waits the Cares which creepD
A child affrighted in the gloomC
We fain would hide our head and weepD
When lo the coward fear is goneO
The golden sunshine fills the airP
And God has sent us with the dawnO
The strength and will to do and dareP
-
For O the things we see at nightE
The dragons grim the goblins tallF
And worst of all the ghosts in whiteE
That range themselves along the wallF
