The Firstborn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKJK LMLM

The harvest sun lay hot and strongA
On waving grain and grain in sheafB
On dusty highway stretched alongA
On hill and vale on stalk and leafB
-
The wind which stirred the tasseled cornC
Came creeping through the casement wideD
And softly kissed the babe new bornC
That nestled at its mother's sideD
-
That mother spoke in tones that thrilledE
My firstborn's cradled in my armF
Upon my breast his cry is stilledE
And here he lies so dear so warmG
-
To her had come a generous shareH
Of worldly honors and of fameI
Of hours replete with gladness rareH
But no one hour seemed just the sameI
-
As that which came when white and spentJ
With pain of travail great she layK
Thrilled through with rapture and contentJ
And love and pride that August dayK
-
The fairest picture of the pastL
Life's tenderest page till all is doneM
A glad young mother holding fastL
God's wondrous gift her little sonM
