What we most need is men of worthA
Men o' the forest markB
Of lofty height and mighty girthA
And green unbroken barkB
-
Not men whom circumstancesC
Have stunted wasted sappedD
Men fearful of fighting chancesC
Clinging to by paths mappedD
-
Holding honor and truth belowE
Promotion place and pelfF
Weaklings that change as winds do blowE
Lost in their love of selfF
-
Tricksters playing a game unfairG
Count them sirs at this hourH
Ready to dance to maddest airG
Piped by the man in powerH
-
The need sore need of this young landI
Is honest men good sirsC
Men as her oak trees tall and grandI
Staunch as her stalwart firsC
-
Steadfast unswerving first and lastJ
Fearless of front and strongK
Meeting the challenge of the blastJ
With high clear battle songK
-
Not sapless things of the bywaysC
Lacking in life and strengthL
Not shrivelled shrubs of the highwaysC
Pigmy of breadth and lengthL
-
But noblest growth of God's green earthA
Men o' the forest markB
Of lofty height and giant girthA
And green unbroken barkB
