Low in the ivy covered church she kneeledA
The sunshine falling on her golden hairB
The moaning of a soul with hurt unhealedA
Was her low breathed and broken cry of prayerB
-
Thy wounded hand dear Christ Thy wounded handA
I pray Thee lay it on this heart of mineC
This heart so sick with grief it cannot standA
Aught heavier than this tender touch of ThineC
-
Thy wounded hand dear Christ O let it pressD
Here where the hurt is hardest where the painE
Throbs fiercest and the utter emptinessF
Mocks at glad memories and longings vainE
-
Thy wounded hand dear Christ who long agoG
Slept by Thy mother's side in BethlehemH
Think of her cradling arms her love song lowG
And pity me when Thou dost think of themH
-
My baby girl my pretty dear I missI
Morning and noon and night her ways so wiseJ
The patting of her soft warm hands the kissI
The cooing voice the sunshine of her eyesJ
-
I sleep and dream she nestles close my ownK
Her red mouth on my breast I wake and cryL
She sleeps out yonder in the dark aloneK
My arms are empty and my bosom dryL
-
Thy wounded hand dear Christ will surely bringM
Healing for this great anguish that I bearB
A nursing babe a little dimpled thingM
God might have left her to her mother's careB
-
Thy wounded hand dear Christ O let me feelN
Its touch to day and past all doubting proveO
Thou hast not lost Thine ancient power to healN
Press out the bitterness fill up with loveP
-
O Babe that in the manger rude did sleepQ
O Prince of Peace Thy tender wounded palmR
Still holds the oil of joy for those that weepQ
Still holds the comforting the Gilead's balmR
