Decorating The Old Church Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED AFBF GHGF IJKJ AHAB

Gray old gardener what do you bringA
Laurel and ivy and bayB
With palms for the crowning of a KingA
The morrow is Christmas DayB
-
Holly with thorns and berries like bloodC
On its shiny greenness flungD
O the pierc d side and the thorny crownE
And the cross whereon He hungD
-
The mistletoe meaning All healingA
Hangs close to the holly's thornF
Lest we forget that on Christmas DayB
The Healer of Souls was bornF
-
Ivy's for faith on the altar railG
Let it creep where all may seeH
It crept till it kissed a cheek so paleG
That night in GethsemaneF
-
Bay's for remembrance full and sweetI
It speaks with its fragrant breathJ
Of manger and cross and a lowly tombK
And a love that conquered deathJ
-
And laurel leaves for the wreath I bringA
The laurel for victoryH
And palms for the crowning of a KingA
The morrow is Christmas DayB
