Oh a big broad shouldered fellow was BenA
And homely as you would seeB
Such an awkward walker and stammering talkerC
And as bashful as he could beB
-
The son of a lone widowed mother was heB
And right well did he act his partD
A giant at sowing and reaping and mowingE
His farm was the pride of his heartD
-
His mother depended on his strong armF
In the cottage so neat and trimG
He kept the fires burning did sweeping and churningE
Oh the odd jobs saved up for himG
-
My Ben's a comfort she said every dayH
With pride that made his head whirlI
As handy at sweeping as he is at reapingE
Ben is just as good as a girlI
-
A six foot fellow to work round the houseJ
We'll call him 'Miss Ben ' said the girlsK
But Ben heaven bless him never let this distress himG
Till there came a day when the curlsK
-
And blue eyes of Gladys the prettiest girlI
And the proudest in all the placeL
His young heart set beating at every chance meetingE
Though she only laughed in his faceL
-
I'll have none but a gay and a gallant manM
Her lips took a scornful curlI
Your pride is in hearing your mother declaringE
'Ben is just as good as a girl '-
-
But sweet little Marjory laughed not at BenA
He was homely awkward shyN
But she liked the fellow whose voice was so mellowO
And she smiled as she passed him byN
-
He went to the front when the war broke outP
And filled his post like a manM
The good natured giant was bold and defiantQ
As soon as the battle beganM
-
You'd never have thought of the broom and the churnR
Nor of the nickname Miss BenA
Had you heard his voice cheering seen his arm clearingE
A path for his own gallant menA
-
Capt Benjamin Brooks he came riding homeS
When the war was over and doneT
As homely and backward as shy and as awkwardU
As tender and loyal a sonT
-
Now Gladys gave him her sunniest smileV
On heroes she ever did doteW
And the proud little beauty felt it her dutyB
To be kind to this young man of noteW
-
But Ben wise fellow liked Marjory bestX
He knew her lips did not curlI
When mother said sweetly Ben does work so neatlyB
He is just as good as a girlI
-
So he wooed and won this Marjory trueY
And made her his loving brideZ
While Gladys she fretted bemoaned and regrettedA2
The goal she had missed by her prideZ
-
To day Ben is filling a prominent placeL
A statesman honest and boldB2
He frees the opprest and he helps the distrestB2
Wins love which is better than goldB2
-
For the very grandest men you can findB2
In this great world's busy whirlI
Are men like my farmer no praise need be warmerC
Than he's just as good as a girlI
