When I was but a little ladA
One thing I could not bearB
It was to stand at mother's kneeC
And have her comb my hairB
-
They didn't keep boys' hair as shortD
As it's kept now a daysE
And mine was always tangled upF
In twenty different waysE
-
I'd twist my mouth and grit my teethG
And say it wasn't fairB
It was a trial and no mistakeH
When mother combed my hairB
-
She'd brush and brush each stubborn curlI
That grew upon my pateJ
And with her scissors nip and clipK
To make the edges straightJ
-
Then smooth it down until it shoneL
While I would grin and bearB
And feel a martyr through and throughM
When mother combed my hairB
-
She'd take my round chin in her handN
And hold it there the whileO
She made the parting carefullyC
Then tell me with a smileO
-
Don't push your cap down on your curlsP
And spoil my work and careB
He is a pretty little ladA
When mother combs his hairB
-
I'd hurry out and rumple upF
That mop of hair so thickQ
A vandal I for she had workedR
So hard to make it slickQ
-
And wish I were a grown up manS
So nobody would dareB
To put a washrag in my earsT
Or comb my tangled hairB
-
Heigho now that I'm bald and grayU
Methinks I would be gladA
To have her smooth my brow and cheeksV
And whisper Mother's ladA
-
A longing for the care free daysE
Doth take me unawareB
To stand a boy at mother's kneeC
And have her comb my hairB
