Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GBHB IJKJ LBMB NOCO PBAB FQRQ SBTB UAVA EBCBWhen I was but a little lad | A |
One thing I could not bear | B |
It was to stand at mother's knee | C |
And have her comb my hair | B |
- | |
They didn't keep boys' hair as short | D |
As it's kept now a days | E |
And mine was always tangled up | F |
In twenty different ways | E |
- | |
I'd twist my mouth and grit my teeth | G |
And say it wasn't fair | B |
It was a trial and no mistake | H |
When mother combed my hair | B |
- | |
She'd brush and brush each stubborn curl | I |
That grew upon my pate | J |
And with her scissors nip and clip | K |
To make the edges straight | J |
- | |
Then smooth it down until it shone | L |
While I would grin and bear | B |
And feel a martyr through and through | M |
When mother combed my hair | B |
- | |
She'd take my round chin in her hand | N |
And hold it there the while | O |
She made the parting carefully | C |
Then tell me with a smile | O |
- | |
Don't push your cap down on your curls | P |
And spoil my work and care | B |
He is a pretty little lad | A |
When mother combs his hair | B |
- | |
I'd hurry out and rumple up | F |
That mop of hair so thick | Q |
A vandal I for she had worked | R |
So hard to make it slick | Q |
- | |
And wish I were a grown up man | S |
So nobody would dare | B |
To put a washrag in my ears | T |
Or comb my tangled hair | B |
- | |
Heigho now that I'm bald and gray | U |
Methinks I would be glad | A |
To have her smooth my brow and cheeks | V |
And whisper Mother's lad | A |
- | |
A longing for the care free days | E |
Doth take me unaware | B |
To stand a boy at mother's knee | C |
And have her comb my hair | B |
