When Winchester Races Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DADA EFGF DCDD HCHC IHI

When Winchester races first took their beginningA
It is said the good people forgot their old SaintB
Not applying at all for the leave of Saint SwithinC
And that William of Wykeham's approval was faintB
-
The races however were fixed and determinedD
The company came and the Weather was charmingA
The Lords and the Ladies were satine'd and erminedD
And nobody saw any future alarmingA
-
But when the old Saint was informed of these doingsE
He made but one Spring from his Shrine to the RoofF
Of the Palace which now lies so sadly in ruinsG
And then he addressed them all standing aloofF
-
'Oh subjects rebellious Oh Venta depravedD
When once we are buried you think we are goneC
But behold me immortal By vice you're enslavedD
You have sinned and must suffer ten farther he saidD
-
These races and revels and dissolute measuresH
With which you're debasing a neighboring PlainC
Let them stand You shall meet with your curse in your pleasuresH
Set off for your course I'll pursue with my rainC
-
Ye cannot but know my command o'er JulyI
Henceforward I'll triumph in shewing my powersH
Shift your race as you will it shall never be dryI
The curse upon Venta is July in showers '-
