The day returns again my natal dayA
What mix'd emotions with the Thought ariseB
Beloved friend four years have pass'd awayA
Since thou wert snatch'd forever from our eyesB
The day commemorative of my birthC
Bestowing Life and Light and Hope on meD
Brings back the hour which was thy last on EarthC
Oh bitter pang of torturing MemoryD
-
Angelic Woman past my power to praiseE
In Language meet thy Talents Temper mindF
Thy solid Worth they captivating GraceG
Thou friend and ornament of HumankindF
-
At Johnson's death by Hamilton t'was saidH
'Seek we a substitute Ah vain the planI
No second best remains to Johnson deadH
None can remind us even of the Man '-
-
So we of thee unequall'd in thy raceG
Unequall'd thou as he the first of MenJ
Vainly we wearch around the vacant placeG
We ne'er may look upon thy like againJ
-
Come then fond Fancy thou indulgant PowerK
Hope is desponding chill severe to theeD
Bless thou this little portion of an hourK
Let me behold her as she used to beD
-
I see her here with all her smiles benignL
Her looks of eager Love her accents sweetM
That voice and Countenance almost divineL
Expression Harmony alike completeM
-
I listen 'tis not sound alone 'tis senseN
'Tis Genius Taste and Tenderness of SoulO
'Tis genuine warmth of heart without pretenceN
And purity of Mind that crowns the wholeO
-
She speaks 'tis Eloquence that grace of TongueP
So rare so lovely Never misappliedQ
By her to palliate Vice or deck a WrongR
She speaks and reasons but on Virtue's sideQ
-
Her's is the Engergy of Soul sincereS
Her Christian Spirit ignorant to feignT
Seeks but to comfort heal enlighten chearS
Confer a pleasure or prevent a painT
-
Can ought enhance such Goodness Yes to meD
Her partial favour from my earliest yearsN
Consummates all Ah Give me yet to seeD
Her smile of Love the Vision diappearsD
-
'Tis past and gone We meet no more belowU
Short is the Cheat of Fancy o'er the TombV
Oh might I hope to equal Bliss to goU
To meet thee Angel in thy future homeW
-
Fain would I feel an union in thy fateX
Fain would I seek to draw an Omen fairS
From this connection in our Earthly dateX
Indulge the harmless weakness Reason spareS
