Oh Mr Best you're very badA
And all the world shall know itB
Your base behaviour shall be sungC
By me a tunefull PoetD
You used to go to HarrowgateD
Each summer as it cameE
And why I pray should you refuseF
To go this year the sameE
-
The way's as plain the road's as smoothG
The Posting not increasedD
You're scarcely stouter than you wereH
Not younger Sir at leastD
-
If e'er the waters were of useI
Why now their use foregoJ
You may not live another yearK
All's mortal here belowJ
-
It is your duty Mr BestD
To give your health repairL
Vain else your Richard's pills will beM
And vain your Consort's careL
-
But yet a nobler Duty callsN
You now towards the NorthO
Arise ennobled as EscortD
Of Martha Lloyd stand forthO
-
She wants your aid she honours youP
With a distinguished callQ
Stand forth to be the friend of herH
Who is the friend of allQ
-
Take her and wonder at your luckR
In having such a TrustD
Her converse sensible and sweetD
Will banish heat and dustD
-
So short she'll make the journey seemS
You'll bid the Chaise stand stillT
T'will be like driving at full speedD
From Newb'ry to Speen hillT
-
Convey her safe to Morton's wifeU
And I'll forget the pastD
And write some verses in your praiseV
As finely and as fastD
-
But if you still refuse to goJ
I'll never let your restD
Buy haunt you with reproachful songW
Oh wicked Mr BestD
