Lament Xviii Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGCC HHII JJKK LLFF

We are thy thankless children gracious LordA
The good thou dost affordA
Lightly do we employB
All careless of the one who giveth joyB
-
We heed not him from whom delights do flowC
Until they fade and goC
We take no thought to renderD
That gratitude we owe the bounteous senderD
-
Yet keep us in thy care Let not our prideE
Cause thee dear God to hideE
The glory of thy beautyF
Chasten us till we shall recall our dutyF
-
Yet punish us as with a father's handG
We mites cannot withstandG
Thine anger we are snowC
Thy wrath the sun that melts us in its glowC
-
Make us not perish thus eternal GodH
From thy too heavy rodH
Recall that thy disdainI
Alone doth give thy children bitter painI
-
Yet I do know thy mercy doth aboundJ
While yet the spheres turn roundJ
And thou wilt never castK
Without the man who humbles him at lastK
-
Though great and many my transgressions areL
Thy goodness greater farL
Than mine iniquityF
Lord manifest thy mercy unto meF
