God hath laid his hand on meA
He hath taken all my gleeA
And my spirit's emptied cupB
Soon must give its life blood upB
-
If the sun doth wake and riseC
If it sink in gilded skiesC
All alike my heart doth acheD
Comfort it can never takeD
-
From my eyelids there do flowE
Tears and I must weep e'en soE
Ever ever Lord of LightF
Who can hide him from thy sightF
-
Though we shun the stormy seaA
Though from war's affray we fleeA
Yet misfortune shows her faceG
Howsoe'er concealed our placeG
-
Mine a life so far from fameH
Few there were could know my nameH
Evil hap and jealousyA
Had no way of harming meA
-
But the Lord who doth disdainI
Flimsy safeguards raised by manJ
Struck a blow more swift and sureK
In that I was more secureK
-
Poor philosophy so lateL
Of its power wont to prateL
Showeth its incompetenceM
Now that joy proceedeth henceN
-
Sometimes still it strives to proveO
Heavy care it can removeO
But its little weight doth failP
To raise sorrow in the scaleP
-
Idle is the foolish claimH
Harm can have another nameH
He who laughs when he is sadL
I should say was only madL
-
Him who tries to prove our tearsQ
Trifles I will lend mine earsR
But my sorrow he therebyS
Doth not check but magnifyS
-
Choice I have none I must needsT
Weep if all my spirit bleedsT
Calling it a graceless partL
Only stabs anew my heartL
-
All such medicine dear LordL
Is another sharper swordL
Who my healing would insureK
Will seek out a gentler cureK
-
Let my tears prolong their flowE
Wisdom I most truly knowE
Hath no power to consoleU
Only God can make me wholeU
