Misfortune hath constrained meA
To leave the lute and poetryA
Nor can I from their easing borrowB
Sleep for my sorrowB
-
Do I see true or hath a dreamC
Flown forth from ivory gates to gleamC
In phantom gold before forsakingD
Its poor cheat wakingD
-
Oh mad mistaken humankindE
'Tis easy triumph for the mindE
While yet no ill adventure strikes usF
And naught mislikes usF
-
In plenty we praise povertyA
'Mid pleasures we hold grief to beA
And even death ere it shall stifleG
Our breath a trifleG
-
But when the grudging spinner scantsF
Her thread and fate no surcease grantsF
From grief most deep and need most wearingD
Less calm our bearingD
-
Ah Tully thou didst flee from RomeH
With weeping who didst say his homeH
The wise man found in any stationI
In any nationI
-
And why dost mourn thy daughter soF
When thou hast said the only woeF
That man need dread is base dishonorJ
Why sorrow on herJ
-
Death thou hast said can terrifyK
The godless man alone Then whyK
So loth the pay for boldness givingD
To leave off livingD
-
Thy words that have persuaded menL
Persuade not thee angelic penL
Disaster findeth thy defensesF
Like mine pretensesF
-
Soft stone is man he takes the linesF
That Fortune's cutting tool designsF
To press the wounds wherewith she graves usF
Racks us or saves usF
-
Time father of forgetfulnessF
So longed for now in my distressF
Since wisdom nor the saints can steel meA
Oh do thou heal meA
