Roman Law Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEEE FGFG HHHH IJIJ KLKL HMHM LMLM

I am a coach in Roman law by fateA
But Nature must have meant me for a poetB
And while I struggle with a rule or dateA
Poetic thoughts intrude before I know itC
-
The changing sunshine on the summer seaD
Drives forth the law of cessio bonorumE
Peculium castrense speaks to meE
Of Horace and his Dulce et decorumE
-
I see the matine bee among the flowersF
Instead of testamentum militareG
And wander far away from agent's powersF
To picture me again some Maud or MaryG
-
In truth there is no sequence in the thoughtH
Why should the title De SocietateH
Suggest not trading partners as it oughtH
But visions of my last night's valse with KatieH
-
But worse than this when I have done my taskI
Stern law again asserts her dominationJ
'Tis cruel 'mid the new mown hay to baskI
And find one's mind is running on novationJ
-
Or in the dusk when glow worms light the mossK
To hear the distant voice of PhilomelaL
Expound the three varieties of dosK
And wax right eloquent about tutelaL
-
I had a little respite yesterdayH
Dining with one who well knew how to dine usM
But when I slept the charm soon fled awayH
I dreamed I was a pr tor peregrinusM
-
Dismasted in the deep of law I lieL
A poor reward it is to stand confessed asM
The Virgil of the interdict de viL
The Petrarch of the patria potestasM
