In days of old did law and rimeA
A common pathway followB
For Themis in the mythic timeA
Was sister of ApolloB
-
The Hindu statutes tripped in feetC
As daintily as DryadsD
And law in Wales to be completeC
Was versified in triadsD
-
The wise Alfonso of CastileB
Composed his code in metreE
Thereby to make its flavour feelB
A little bit the sweeterE
-
But law and rime were found to beF
A trifle inconsistentG
And now in statutes poetryF
Is wholly non existentG
-
Still here and there some advocateH
Before his fellows know itI
Has had bestowed on him by fateJ
The laurel of the poetH
-
Let him who has been honoured soD
In truth a rara avisD
Find precedents in CiceroD
And our Chief Justice DavisD
-
And more than all in Cino heF
So plaintive a narratorE
Of fair Selvaggia's crueltyF
Won fame as a glossatorE
-
Let him remember Thomas MoreE
And Scott and AlciatusD
And Grotius with an ample storeE
Of most divine afflatusD
-
But let him if his bread and cheeseD
Depend on his professionK
Bethink him that the art of theseD
Was not their sole possessionK
-
The stream that flows from HeliconL
Is scarcely a PactolusD
A richer prize is theirs who conL
Dull treatises on dolusD
-
'Tis well that some bold spirits dareE
To cut themselves asunderE
From bonds of law like old Moli reE
While lawyers gaze in wonderE
-
The world had been a poorer placeD
Had Goethe lived by pleadingM
Or Tasso won a hopeless caseD
With Ariosto leadingM
