I sat by the fire and watched it blazeA
And dreamed that she wrote me a letterB
And for that dream to the end of my daysA
To Fancy I owe myself debtorB
-
Next day there came the postman's knockC
The morning was bright and sunnyD
And showed me a sheaf of circulars stockC
Attempts to get hold of my moneyD
-
'Mid correspondence of this dull kindE
A dainty notelet lay hiddenF
It seemed as though it had half a mindE
To consider itself forbiddenF
-
The writing was like herself completeG
With a touch of her queenly bearingH
So Venus wrote when she ordered in CreteG
Her doves to take her an airingH
-
Inside it was just as promisingH
'Twas a pressing invitationF
To dine at her house to morrow and bringH
My book for her approbationF
-
For I have published be it confessedI
A little volume of versesJ
And in the volume whatever is bestI
The praise of herself rehearsesK
-
I sit by the fire and again I dreamL
A happier dream than everB
I see her beautiful eyes soft gleamL
As she murmurs How lovely how cleverB
-
Her criticism may be commonplaceM
But who can be angry afterB
Now sweet with pity he marks her faceM
Now bright with impulsive laughterB
