''Scurious like ' said the tree toadA
'I've twittered far rain all dayB
And I got up soonC
And I hollered till noonC
But the sun hit blazed awayB
Till I jest clumb down in a crawfish holeD
Weary at heart and sick at soulD
-
'Dozed away far an hourE
And I tackled the thing aginF
And I sung and sungG
Till I knowed my lungG
Was jest about give inH
And then thinks I ef hit don't rain nowI
There're nothin' in singin' anyhowI
-
'Once in awhile someJ
Would come a drivin' pastK
And he'd hear my cryL
And stop and sighL
Till I jest laid back at lastK
And I hollered rain till I thought my th'oatM
Would bust right open at ever' noteM
-
'But I fetched her O I fetched herE
'Cause a little while agoN
As I kindo' setO
With one eye shetO
And a singin' soft and lowN
A voice drapped down on my fevered brainP
Sayin' ' Ef you'll jest hush I'll rain ''-

Carolyn Jackson: My mama had read this and loved it but couldn't remember it all in her later years. My local librarian looked it up for me, and it showed in v. 3 "once in a while some farmer"
