The Sermon Of The Rose Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABCADEFDEF GHIJGIIGKLMKLM FNNFFNNFOPDQPD

Wilful we are in our infirmityA
Of childish questioning and discontentB
Whate'er befalls us is divinely meantB
Thou Truth the clearer for thy mysteryA
Make us to meet what is or is to beA
With fervid welcome knowing it is sentB
To serve us in some way full excellentC
Though we discern it all belatedlyA
The rose buds and the rose blooms and the roseD
Bows in the dews and in its fulness loE
Is in the lover's hand then on the breastF
Of her he loves and there dies And who knowsD
Which fate of all a rose may undergoE
Is fairest dearest sweetest loveliestF
-
Nay we are children we will not matureG
A blessed gift must seem a theft and tearsH
Must storm our eyes when but a joy appearsI
In drear disguise of sorrow and how poorJ
We seem when we are richest most secureG
Against all poverty the lifelong yearsI
We yet must waste in childish doubts and fearsI
That in despite of reason still endureG
Alas the sermon of the rose we willK
Not wisely ponder nor the sobs of griefL
Lulled into sighs of rapture nor the cryM
Of fierce defiance that again is stillK
Be patient patient with our frail beliefL
And stay it yet a little ere we dieM
-
O opulent life of ours though dispossessedF
Of treasure after treasure Youth most fairN
Went first but left its priceless coil of hairN
Moaned over sleepless nights kissed and caressedF
Through drip and blur of tears the tenderestF
And next went Love the ripe rose glowing thereN
Her very sister It is here but whereN
Is she of all the world the first and bestF
And yet how sweet the sweet earth after rainO
How sweet the sunlight on the garden wallP
Across the roses and how sweetly flowsD
The limpid yodel of the brook againQ
And yet and yet how sweeter after allP
The smouldering sweetness of a dead red roseD
