IA
-
As one in sorrow looks uponB
The dead face of a loyal friendC
By the dim light of New Year's dawnD
I saw the Old Year endC
-
Upon the pallid features layE
The dear old smile so warm and brightF
Ere thus its cheer had died awayE
In ashes of delightF
-
The hands that I had learned to loveG
With strength of passion half divineH
Were folded now all heedless ofG
The emptiness of mineH
-
The eyes that once had shed their brightF
Sweet looks like sunshine now were dullI
And ever lidded from the lightF
That made them beautifulI

IIA
-
The chimes of bells were in the airJ
And sounds of mirth in hall and streetK
With pealing laughter everywhereJ
And throb of dancing feetK
-
The mirth and the convivial dinL
Of revelers in wanton gleeM
With tunes of harp and violinL
In tangled harmonyM
-
But with a sense of nameless dreadN
I turned me from the merry faceO
Of this newcomer to my deadN
And kneeling there a spaceO
-
I sobbed aloud all tearfullyM
By this dear face so fixed and coldP
O Lord let not this New Year beM
As happy as the oldP
