Old man never had much to sayA
'Ceptin' to JimB
And Jim was the wildest boy he hadC
And the old man jes' wrapped up in himB
Never heerd him speak but onceD
Er twice in my life and first time wasE
When the army broke out and Jim he wentF
The old man backin' him fer three monthsG
And all 'at I heerd the old man sayA
Was jes' as we turned to start awayA
Well good by JimB
Take keer o' yourse'fH
-
'Peared like he was more satisfiedI
Jes' lookin' at JimB
And likin' him all to hisse'f like seeJ
'Cause he was jes' wrapped up in himB
And over and over I mind the dayA
The old man come and stood round in the wayA
While we was drillin' a watchin' JimB
And down at the deepo a heerin' him sayA
Well good by JimB
Take keer of yourse'fH
-
Never was nothin' about the farmK
Disting'ished JimB
Neighbors all ust to wonder whyL
The old man 'peared wrapped up in himB
But when Cap Biggler he writ backM
'At Jim was the bravest boy we hadC
In the whole dern rigiment white er blackM
And his fightin' good as his farmin' badC
'At he had led with a bullet cleanN
Bored through his thigh and carried the flagO
Through the bloodiest battle you ever seenN
The old man wound up a letter to himB
'At Cap read to us 'at said Tell JimB
Good byL
And take keer of hisse'fH
-
Jim come home jes' long enoughH
To take the whimB
'At he'd like to go back in the calveryJ
And the old man jes' wrapped up in himB
Jim 'lowed 'at he'd had sich luck aforeJ
Guessed he'd tackle her three years moreJ
And the old man give him a colt he'd raisedP
And follered him over to Camp Ben WadeQ
And laid around fer a week er soR
Watchin' Jim on dress paradeQ
Tel finally he rid awayA
And last he heerd was the old man sayA
Well good by JimB
Take keer of yourse'fH
-
Tuk the papers the old man didS
A watchin' fer JimB
Fully believin' he'd make his markT
Some way jes' wrapped up in himB
And many a time the word 'u'd comeU
'At stirred him up like the tap of a drumU
At Petersburg fer instunce whereJ
Jim rid right into their cannons thereJ
And tuk 'em and p'inted 'em t'other wayA
And socked it home to the boys in grayA
As they scooted fer timber and on and onV
Jim a lieutenant and one arm goneW
And the old man's words in his mind all dayA
Well good by JimB
Take keer of yourse'fH
-
Think of a private now perhapsX
We'll say like JimB
'At's dumb clean up to the shoulder strapsX
And the old man jes' wrapped up in himB
Think of him with the war plum' throughJ
And the glorious old Red White and BlueJ
A laughin' the news down over JimB
And the old man bendin' over himB
The surgeon turnin' away with tearsY
'At hadn't leaked fer years and yearsZ
As the hand of the dyin' boy clung toJ
His father's the old voice in his earsZ
Well good by JimB
Take keer of yourse'fH
