The Drum Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCB DDDDEEEE FFFFGGGG GGGGHHHH IIIIJJJJ KKKKLLLL AAAABCCB

utterance that strikes the spirit dumbA
As we hearB
Through the clearC
And unclouded atmosphereC
Thy palpitating syllables roll in upon the earB
-
There's a partD
Of the artD
Of thy music throbbing heartD
That thrills a something in us that awakens with a startD
And in rhymeE
With the chimeE
And exactitude of timeE
Goes marching on to glory to thy melody sublimeE
-
And the guestF
Of the breastF
That thy rolling robs of restF
Is a patriotic spirit as a Continental dressedF
And he loomsG
From the gloomsG
Of a century of tombsG
And the blood he spilled at Lexington in living beauty bloomsG
-
And his eyesG
Wear the guiseG
Of a purpose pure and wiseG
As the love of them is lifted to a something in the skiesG
That is brightH
Red and whiteH
With a blur of starry lightH
As it laughs in silken ripples to the breezes day and nightH
-
There are deepI
Hushes creepI
O'er the pulses as they leapI
As thy tumult fainter growing on the silence falls asleepI
While the prayerJ
Rising thereJ
Wills the sea and earth and airJ
As a heritage to Freedom's sons and daughters everywhereJ
-
Then with soundK
As profoundK
As the thunderings resoundK
Come thy wild reverberations in a throe that shakes the groundK
And a cryL
Flung on highL
Like the flag it flutters byL
Wings rapturously upward till it nestles in the skyL
-
O the drumA
There is someA
Intonation in thy grumA
Monotony of utterance that strikes the spirit dumbA
As we hearB
Through the clearC
And unclouded atmosphereC
Thy palpitating syllables roll in upon the earB
