Bound and bordered in leaf greenA
Edged with trellised buds and flowersB
And glad Summer gold with cleanA
White and purple morning gloriesC
Such as suit the songs and storiesC
Of this book of oursB
Unrevised in text or sceneA
The Book of Joyous ChildrenD
-
Wild and breathless in their gleeE
Lawless rangers of all waysF
Winding through lush greeneryE
Of Elysian vales the vinyD
Bowery groves of shady shinyD
Haunts of childish daysF
Spread and read again with meD
The Book of Joyous ChildrenD
-
What a whir of wings and whatG
Sudden drench of dews uponD
The young brows wreathed all unsoughtG
With the apple blossom garlandsF
Of the poets of those far landsF
Whence all dreams are drawnD
Set herein and soiling notG
The Book of Joyous ChildrenD
-
In their blithe companionshipH
Taste again these pages throughI
The hot honey on your lipH
Of the sun smit wild strawberryD
Or the chill tart of the cherryD
Kneel all glowing toI
The cool spring and with it sipH
The Book of Joyous ChildrenD
-
As their laughter needs no ruleJ
So accept their language prayK
Touch it not with any toolJ
Surely we may understand itG
As the heart has parsed or scanned itG
Is a worthy wayK
Though found not in any SchoolJ
The Book of Joyous ChildrenD
-
Be a truant know no placeF
Of prison under heaven's rimL
Front the Father's smiling faceF
Smiling that you smile the brighterM
For the heavy hearts made lighterM
Since you smile with HimL
Take and thank Him for His graceF
The Book of Joyous ChildrenD
