Where are they the AfterwhilesA
Luring us the lengthening milesA
Of our lives Where is the dawnB
With the dew across the lawnB
Stroked with eager feet the farC
Way the hills and valleys areC
Were the sun that smites the frownD
Of the eastward gazer downD
Where the rifted wreaths of mistE
O'er us tinged with amethystE
Round the mountain's steep defilesA
Where are the afterwhilesA
-
Afterwhile and we will goF
Thither yon and too and froF
From the stifling city streetsA
To the country's cool retreatsA
From the riot to the restG
Were hearts beat the placidestG
Afterwhile and we will fallH
Under breezy trees and lollI
In the shade with thirsty sightG
Drinking deep the blue delightG
Of the skies that will beguileJ
Us as children afterwhileJ
-
Afterwhile and one intendsA
To be gentler to his friendsA
To walk with them in the hushK
Of still evenings o'er the plushK
Of home leading fields and standG
Long at parting hand in handG
One in time will joy to takeL
New resolves for some one's sakeL
And wear then the look that liesA
Clear and pure in other eyesA
We will soothe and reconcileJ
His own conscience afterwhileJ
-
Afterwhile we have in viewM
A far scene to journey toM
Where the old home is and whereN
The old mother waits us thereN
Peering as the time grows lateG
Down the old path to the gateG
How we'll click the latch that locksA
In the pinks and hollyhocksA
And leap up the path once moreO
Where she waits us at the doorO
How we'll greet the dear old smileJ
And the warm tears afterwhileJ
-
Ah the endless afterwhilesA
Leagues on leagues and miles on milesA
In distance far withdrawnB
Stretching on and on and onP
Till the fancy is footsoreO
And faints in the dust beforeO
The last milestone's granite faceA
Hacked with Here Beginneth SpaceA
O far glimmering worlds and wingsA
Mystic smiles and beckoningsA
Lead us through the shadowy aislesA
Out into the afterwhilesA
