North And South Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABACCC DDEDFFF GGBGBBB BBHBDDD IIJIDDD

Of the North I wove a dreamA
All bespangled with the gleamA
Of the glancing wings of swallowsB
Dipping ripples in a streamA
That like a tide of wineC
Wound through lands of shade and shineC
Where purple grapes hung bursting on the vineC
-
And where orchard boughs were bentD
Till their tawny fruitage blentD
With the golden wake that marked theE
Way the happy reapers wentD
Where the dawn died into noonF
As the May mists into JuneF
And the dusk fell like a sweet face in a swoonF
-
Of the South I dreamed And thereG
Came a vision clear and fairG
As the marvelous enchantmentsB
Of the mirage of the airG
And I saw the bayou treesB
With their lavish draperiesB
Hang heavy o'er the moon washed cypress kneesB
-
Peering from lush fens of riceB
I beheld the Negro's eyesB
Lit with that old superstitionH
Death itself can not disguiseB
And I saw the palm tree nodD
Like an oriental godD
And the cotton froth and bubble from the podD
-
And I dreamed that North and SouthI
With a sigh of dew and drouthI
Blew each unto the otherJ
The salute of lip and mouthI
And I wakened awed and thrilledD
Every doubting murmur stilledD
In the silence of the dream I found fulfilledD
