My Bachelor Chum Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJKLKL AMAMNANA

A corpulent man is my bachelor chumA
With a neck apoplectic and thickB
An abdomen on him as big as a drumA
And a fist big enough for the stickB
With a walk that for grace is clear out of the caseC
And a wobble uncertain as thoughD
His little bow legs had forgotten the paceC
That in youth used to favor him soD
-
He is forty at least and the top of his headE
Is a bald and a glittering thingF
And his nose and his two chubby cheeks are as redE
As three rival roses in springF
-
His mouth is a grin with the corners tucked inG
And his laugh is so breezy and brightH
That it ripples his features and dimples his chinG
With a billowy look of delightH
-
He is fond of declaring he don't care a strawI
That the ills of a bachelor's lifeJ
Are blisses compared with a mother in lawI
And a boarding school miss for a wifeJ
So he smokes and he drinks and he jokes and he winksK
And he dines and he wines all aloneL
With a thumb ever ready to snap as he thinksK
Of the comforts he never has knownL
-
But up in his den Ah my bachelor chumA
I have sat with him there in the gloomM
When the laugh of his lips died away to becomeA
But a phantom of mirth in the roomM
And to look on him there you would love him for allN
His ridiculous ways and be dumbA
As the little girl face that smiles down from the wallN
On the tears of my bachelor chumA
