Morton Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GCGC HIHI JKJK LMLL LNLN

The warm pulse of the nation has grown chillA
The muffled heart of Freedom like a knellB
Throbs solemnly for one whose earthly willA
Wrought every mission wellB
-
Whose glowing reason towered above the seaC
Of dark disaster like a beacon lightD
And led the Ship of State unscathed and freeC
Out of the gulfs of nightD
-
When Treason rabid mouthed and fanged with steelE
Lay growling o'er the bones of fallen bravesF
And when beneath the tyrant's iron heelE
Were ground the hearts of slavesF
-
And War with all his train of horrors leaptG
Across the fortress walls of LibertyC
With havoc e'en the marble goddess weptG
With tears of blood to seeC
-
Throughout it all his brave and kingly mindH
Kept loyal vigil o'er the patriot's vowI
And yet the flag he lifted to the windH
Is drooping o'er him nowI
-
And Peace all pallid from the battle fieldJ
When first again it hovered o'er the landK
And found his voice above it like a shieldJ
Had nestled in his handK
-
-
-
O throne of State and gilded Senate hallsL
Though thousands throng your aisles and galleriesM
How empty are ye and what silence fallsL
On your hilaritiesL
-
And yet though great the loss to us appearsL
The consolation sweetens all our painN
Though hushed the voice through all the coming yearsL
Its echoes will remainN
