Luther Benson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDDEEFF GHAAIJKKAA LLMMNNOOPP AAQQRRSSOO

AFTER READING HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHYA
-
POOR victim of that vulture curseB
That hovers o'er the universeB
With ready talons quick to strikeC
In every human heart alikeC
And cruel beak to stab and tearD
In virtue's vitals everywhereD
You need no sympathy of mineE
To aid you for a strength divineE
Encircles you and lifts you clearF
Above this earthly atmosphereF
-
And yet I can but call you poorG
As looking through the open doorH
Of your sad life I only seeA
A broad landscape of miseryA
And catch through mists of pitying tearsI
The ruins of your younger yearsJ
I see a father's shielding armK
Thrown round you in a wild alarmK
Struck down and powerless to freeA
Or aid you in your agonyA
-
I see a happy home grow darkL
And desolate the latest sparkL
Of hope is passing in eclipseM
The prayer upon a mother's lipsM
Has fallen with her latest breathN
In ashes on the lips of deathN
I see a penitent who reelsO
And writhes and clasps his hands and kneelsO
And moans for mercy for the sakeP
Of that fond heart he dared to breakP
-
And lo as when in GalileeA
A voice above the troubled seaA
Commanded 'Peace be still ' the floodQ
That rolled in tempest waves of bloodQ
Within you fell in calm so sweetR
It ripples round the Saviour's feetR
And all your noble nature thrilledS
With brightest hope and faith and filledS
Your thirsty soul with joy and peaceO
And praise to Him who gave releaseO
