Tell you what I like the bestA
'Long about knee deep in JuneB
'Bout the time strawberries meltsC
On the vine some afternoonB
Like to jes' git out and restA
And not work at nothin' elseD
-
Orchard's where I'd ruther beE
Needn't fence it in fer meE
Jes' the whole sky overheadF
And the whole airth underneathG
Sort o' so's a man kin breatheH
Like he ort and kind o' hasI
Elbow room to keerlesslyJ
Sprawl out len'thways on the grassK
Where the shadders thick and softL
As the kivvers on the bedF
Mother fixes in the loftM
Allus when they's companyE
-
Jes' a sort o' lazin thereN
S'lazy 'at you peek and peerO
Through the wavin' leaves aboveP
Like a feller 'ats in loveP
And don't know it ner don't keerO
Ever'thing you hear and seeE
Got some sort o' interestQ
Maybe find a bluebird's nestA
Tucked up there conveenentlyJ
Fer the boy 'at's ap' to beE
Up some other apple treeE
Watch the swallers skootin' pastR
Bout as peert as you could astR
Er the Bob white raise and whizS
Where some other's whistle isS
-
Ketch a shadder down belowJ
And look up to find the crowJ
Er a hawk away up thereO
'Pearantly froze in the airO
Hear the old hen squawk and squatT
Over ever' chick she's gotT
Suddent like and she knows whereO
That air hawk is well as youU
You jes' bet yer life she doU
Eyes a glitterin' like glassK
Waitin' till he makes a passK
-
Pee wees wingin' to expressV
My opinion 's second classK
Yit you'll hear 'em more er lessV
Sapsucks gittin' down to bizS
Weedin' out the lonesomenessS
Mr Bluejay full o' sassS
In them baseball clothes o' hisS
Sportin' round the orchad jes'S
Like he owned the premisesS
Sun out in the fields kin sizzS
But flat on yer back I guessS
In the shade's where glory isS
That's jes' what I'd like to doU
Stiddy fer a year er twoU
-
Plague Ef they ain't somepin' inW
Work 'at kind o' goes ag'in'W
My convictions 'long aboutX
Here in June especiallyE
Under some ole apple treeE
Jes' a restin through and throughU
I could git along withoutX
Nothin' else at all to doU
Only jes' a wishin' youU
Wuz a gittin' there like meE
And June wuz eternityE
-
Lay out there and try to seeE
Jes' how lazy you kin beE
Tumble round and souse yer headF
In the clover bloom er pullJ
Yer straw hat acrost yer eyesS
And peek through it at the skiesS
Thinkin' of old chums 'ats deadF
Maybe smilin' back at youU
In betwixt the beautifulJ
Clouds o'gold and white and blueU
Month a man kin railly loveP
June you know I'm talkin' ofP
-
March ain't never nothin' newU
April's altogether tooU
Brash fer me and May I jes'S
'Bominate its promisesS
Little hints o' sunshine andY
Green around the timber landZ
A few blossoms and a fewU
Chip birds and a sprout er twoU
Drap asleep and it turns inW
Fore daylight and snows ag'inW
But when June comes Clear my th'oatA2
With wild honey Rench my hairO
In the dew And hold my coatA2
Whoop out loud And th'ow my hatB2
June wants me and I'm to spareO
Spread them shadders anywhereO
I'll get down and waller thereO
And obleeged to you at thatB2
