Out at Woodruff Place afarA
From the city's glare and jarA
With the leafy trees insteadB
Of the awnings overheadB
With the shadows cool and sweetC
For the fever of the streetC
With the silence like a prayerD
Breathing round us everywhereD
-
Gracious anchorage at lastE
From the billows of the vastE
Tide of life that comes and goesF
Whence and where nobody knowsF
Moving like a skeptic's thoughtG
Out of nowhere into naughtG
Touch and tame us with thy graceH
Placid calm of Woodruff PlaceH
-
Weave a wreath of beechen leavesI
For the brow that throbs and grievesI
O'er the ledger bloody linedJ
'Neath the sun struck window blindJ
Send the breath of woodland bloomK
Through the sick man's prison roomK
Till his old farm home shall swimL
Sweet in mind to hearten himL
-
Out at Woodruff Place the MuseM
Dips her sandal in the dewsM
Sacredly as night and dawnN
Baptize lilied grove and lawnN
Woody path or paven wayO
She doth haunt them night and dayO
Sun or moonlight through the treesP
To her eyes are melodiesP
-
Swinging lanterns twinkling clearQ
Through night scenes are songs to herR
Tinted lilts and choiring huesM
Blent with children's glad halloosM
Then belated lays that fadeS
Into midnight's serenadeS
Vine like words and zithern stringsM
Twined through ali her slumberingsM
-
Blessed be each hearthstone setT
Neighboring the violetU
Blessed every rooftree prayedS
Over by the beech's shadelV
Blessed doorway opening whereD
We may look on Nature thereD
Hand to hand and face to faceM
Storied realm or Woodruff PlaceM
