| So I said 'Good by' to it | D |
| - | |
| It's got to be and it's goin' to be | F |
| So at least I always try | G |
| To kind o' say in a hearty way | A |
| 'Well it's got to be Good by ' | - |
| - | |
| The time jes melts like a late last snow | H |
| When it's got to be it melts | I |
| But I aim to keep a cheerful mind | J |
| Ef I can't keep nothin' else | K |
| I knowed when I come to twenty one | L |
| That I'd soon be twenty two | M |
| So I waved one hand at the soft young man | N |
| And I said 'Good by to you ' | - |
| - | |
| It's got to be and it's goin' to be | F |
| So at least I always try | G |
| To kind o' say in a cheerful way | A |
| 'Well it's got to be Good by ' | - |

| She jes' smiled up like she always done | L |

| - | |
| It's got to be and it's goin' to be | F |
| So at least I always try | G |
| To kind o' say in a humble way | A |
| 'Well it's got to be Good by ' | - |
| - | |
| And then my boy as he growed to be | F |
| Almost a man in size | T |
| Was more than a pride and joy to me | F |
| With his mother's smilin' eyes | T |
| He gimme the slip when the War broke out | U |
| And followed me And I | G |
| Never knowed till the first right's end | V |
| I found him and then 'Good by ' | - |
| - | |
| It's got to be and it's goin' to be | F |
| So at least I always try | G |
| To kind o' say in a patient way | A |
| 'Well it's got to be Good by ' | - |
| - | |
| I have said 'Good by Good by Good by ' | - |
| With my very best good will | W |
| All through life from the first and I | G |
| Am a cheerful old man still | W |
| - | |
| But it's got to end and it's goin' to end | V |
| And this is the thing I'll do | M |
| With my last breath I will laugh O Death | X |
| And say 'Good by' to you | M |
| - | |
| It's got to be And again I say | A |
| When his old scythe circles high | G |
| I'll laugh of course in the kindest way | A |
| As I say 'Good by Good by ' | - |
