Dan Paine Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDD EFEFGGDD HIHIJKDD LMLMNNDD OPOPQQDD

Old friend of mine whose chiming nameA
Has been the burthen of a rhymeB
Within my heart since first I cameA
To know thee in thy mellow primeB
With warm emotions in my breastC
That can but coldly be expressedC
And hopes and wishes wild and vainD
I reach my hand to thee Dan PaineD
-
In fancy as I sit aloneE
In gloomy fellowship with careF
I hear again thy cheery toneE
And wheel for thee an easy chairF
And from my hand the pencil fallsG
My book upon the carpet sprawlsG
As eager soul and heart and brainD
Leap up to welcome thee Dan PaineD
-
A something gentle in thy meinH
A something tender in thy voiceI
Has made my trouble so sereneH
I can but weep from very choiceI
And even then my tears I guessJ
Hold more of sweet than bitternessK
And more of gleaming shine than rainD
Because of thy bright smile Dan PaineD
-
The wrinkles that the years have spunL
And tangled round thy tawny faceM
Are kinked with laughter every oneL
And fashioned in a mirthful graceM
And though the twinkle of thine eyesN
Is keen as frost when Summer diesN
It can not long as frost remainD
While thy warm soul shines out Dan PaineD
-
And so I drain a health to theeO
May merry Joy and jolly MirthP
Like children clamber on thy kneeO
And ride thee round the happy earthP
And when at last the hand of FateQ
Shall lift the latch of Canaan's gateQ
And usher me in thy domainD
Smile on me just as now Dan PaineD
