A day of torpor in the sullen heat | B |
Of Summer's passion In the sluggish stream | C |
The panting cattle lave their lazy feet | B |
With drowsy eyes and dream | C |
- | |
Long since the winds have died and in the sky | D |
There lives no cloud to hint of Nature's grief | E |
The sun glares ever like an evil eye | D |
And withers flower and leaf | E |
- | |
Upon the gleaming harvest field remote | F |
The thresher lies deserted like some old | G |
Dismantled galleon that hangs afloat | F |
Upon a sea of gold | G |
- | |
The yearning cry of some bewildered bird | H |
Above an empty nest and truant boys | I |
Along the river's shady margin heard | H |
A harmony of noise | I |
- | |
A melody of wrangling voices blent | H |
With liquid laughter and with rippling calls | J |
Of piping lips and thrilling echoes sent | H |
To mimic waterfalls | J |
- | |
And through the hazy veil the atmosphere | K |
Has draped about the gleaming face of Day | H |
The sifted glances of the sun appear | K |
In splinterings of spray | H |
- | |
The dusty highway like a cloud of dawn | L |
Trails o'er the hillside and the passer by | D |
A tired ghost in misty shroud toils on | M |
His journey to the sky | D |
- | |
And down across the valley's drooping sweep | N |
Withdrawn to farthest limit of the glade | H |
The forest stands in silence drinking deep | N |
Its purple wine of shade | H |
- | |
The gossamer floats up on phantom wing | O |
The sailor vision voyages the skies | P |
And carries into chaos everything | O |
That freights the weary eyes | P |
- | |
Till throbbing on and on the pulse of heat | H |
Increases reaches passes fever's height | H |
And Day sinks into slumber cool and sweet | H |
Within the arms of Night | H |
