At Last Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEF GHIH JKJKEE LMLMNN OP Q

A dark tempestuous night the stars shut inA
With shrouds of fog an inky jet black blotB
The firmament and where the moon has beenA
An hour agone seems like the darkest spotB
The weird wind furious at its demon gameC
Rattles one's fancy like a window frameC
-
A care worn face peers out into the darkD
And childish faces frightened at the gloomE
Grow awed and vacant as they turn to markD
The father's as he passes through the roomE
The gate latch clatters and wee baby BessF
Whispers 'The doctor's tummin' now I dess '-
-
The father turns a sharp swift flash of painG
Flits o'er his face 'Amanda child I saidH
A moment since I see I must AGAINI
Go take your little sisters off to bedH
There Effie Rose and CLARA MUSTN'T CRY '-
'I tan't he'p it I'm fyaid 'at mama'll die '-
-
What are his feelings when this man aloneJ
Sits in the silence glaring in the grateK
That sobs and sighs on in an undertoneJ
As stoical immovable as FateK
While muffled voices from the sick one's roomE
Come in like heralds of a dreaded doomE
-
The door latch jingles in the doorway standsL
The doctor while the draft puffs in a breathM
The dead coals leap to life and clap their handsL
The flames flash up A face as pale as deathM
Turns slowly teeth tight clenched and with a lookN
The doctor through his specs reads like a bookN
-
'Come brace up Major ' 'Let me know the worst '-
'W'y you're the biggest fool I ever sawO
Here Major take a little brandy firstP
There She's a BOY I mean HE is hurrah '-
'Wake up the other girls and shout for joyQ
Eureka is his name I've found A BOY '-
