Even in such a scene of senseless play	A
The children were surprised one summer day	A
By a strange man who called across the fence	B
Inquiring for their father's residence	C
And being answered that this was the place	D
Opened the gate and with a radiant face	D
Came in and sat down with them in the shade	E
And waited till the absent father made	E
His noon appearance with a warmth and zest	F
That told he had no ordinary guest	F
In this man whose low spoken name he knew	G
At once demurring as the stranger drew	G
A stuffy notebook out and turned and set	H
A big fat finger on a page and let	H
The writing thereon testify instead	I
Of further speech And as the father read	I
All silently the curious children took	J
Exacting inventory both of book	J
And man He wore a long napped white fur hat	K
Pulled firmly on his head and under that	K
Rather long silvery hair or iron gray	A
For he was not an old man anyway	A
Not beyond sixty And he wore a pair	L
Of square framed spectacles or rather there	L
Were two more than a pair the extra two	G
Flared at the corners at the eyes' side view	G
In as redundant vision as the eyes	M
Of grasshoppers or bees or dragonflies	M
Later the children heard the father say	M
He was A Noted Traveler and would stay	M
Some days with them In which time host and guest	F
Discussed alone in deepest interest	N
Some vague mysterious matter that defied	O
The wistful children loitering outside	O
The spare room door There Bud acquired a quite	P
New list of big words such as Disunite	P
And Shibboleth and Aristocracy	M
And Juggernaut and Squatter Sovereignty	M
And Anti slavery Emancipate	P
Irrepressible conflict and The Great	P
Battle of Armageddon obviously	M
A pamphlet brought from Washington D C	M
And spread among such friends as might occur	Q
Of like views with The Noted Traveler	Q
