A Monument For The Soldiers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE EGHGIEJE AKEKEEEE ALELMNEN ABEEOEPE

A monument for the SoldiersA
And what will ye build it ofB
Can ye build it of marble or brass or bronzeC
Outlasting the Soldiers' loveB
Can ye glorify it with legendsD
As grand as their blood hath writE
From the inmost shrine of this land of thineF
To the outermost verge of itE
-
And the answer came We would build itE
Out of our hopes made sureG
And out of our purest prayers and tearsH
And out of our faith secureG
We would build it out of the great white truthsI
Their death hath sanctifiedE
And the sculptured forms of the men in armsJ
And their faces ere they diedE
-
And what heroic figuresA
Can the sculptor carve in stoneK
Can the marble breast be made to bleedE
And the marble lips to moanK
Can the marble brow be feveredE
And the marble eyes be gravedE
To look their last as the flag floats pastE
On the country they have savedE
-
And the answer came The figuresA
Shall all be fair and braveL
And as befitting as pure and whiteE
As the stars above their graveL
The marble lips and breast and browM
Whereon the laurel liesN
Bequeath us right to guard the flightE
Of the old flag in the skiesN
-
A monument for the SoldiersA
Built of a people's loveB
And blazoned and decked and panopliedE
With the hearts ye build it oftE
And see that ye build it statelyO
In pillar and niche and gateE
And high in pose as the souls of thoseP
It would commemorateE
