Mellow hazes lowly trailingA
Over wood and meadow veilingA
Somber skies with wildfowl sailingA
Sailor like to foreign landsB
And the north wind overleapingA
Summer's brink and floodlike sweepingA
Wrecks of roses where the weepingA
Willows wring their helpless handsB
-
Flared like Titan torches flingingA
Flakes of flame and embers springingA
From the vale the trees stand swingingA
In the moaning atmosphereC
While in dead'ning lands the lowingA
Of the cattle sadder growingA
Fills the sense to overflowingA
With the sorrow of the yearC
-
Sorrowfully yet the sweeterD
Sings the brook in rippled meterD
Under boughs that lithely teeterD
Lorn birds answering from the shoresE
Through the viny shady shinyF
Interspaces shot with tinyF
Flying motes that fleck the winyF
Wave engraven sycamoresE
-
Fields of ragged stubble wrangledG
With rank weeds and shocks of tangledG
Corn with crests like rent plumes dangledG
Over Harvest's battle piainF
And the sudden whir and whistleH
Of the quail that like a missileH
Whizzes over thorn and thistleH
And a missile drops againF
-
Muffled voices hid in thicketsE
Where the redbird stops to stick itsE
Ruddy beak betwixt the picketsE
Of the truant's rustic trapI
And the sound of laughter ringingA
Where within the wild vine swingingA
Climb Bacchante's schoolmates flingingA
Purple clusters in her lapI
-
Rich as wine the sunset flashesE
Round the tilted world and dashesE
Up the sloping west and splashesE
Red foam over sky and seaE
Till my dream of Autumn palingA
In the splendor all prevailingA
Like a sallow leaf goes sailingA
Down the silence solemnlyE
